Without a doubt, this is the one photo that I get the most email about! Many readers have inquired as to the availability of this stunning portrait in either photo or poster form. (Remember seeing it behind Judge Harry Stone's desk on Night Court?) Okay everyone, here's the scoop!
Photographer and Hurrell historian (and author of Hurrell's Hollywood Portraits) Mark A. Vieira provides us with the most current, definitive answer. He writes:
"The October 1934 photo of Jean Harlow on the polar bear rug (including negative and all rights) is owned by actor and art dealer Allan Rich, Creative Art Images, 2400 Whitman Place, Los Angeles CA 90068. Unfortunately, unless you are an author or art gallery, he will not respond to your inquiry. In the early 80s he made a limited edition of prints from the negative. The edition sold out and now the negative has been "retired." No more prints will be made from it. Ever. Sorry I can't be more encouraging. I myself had to pay $1500 just to use an old, damaged print of it in my book. And I didn't have a research budget!"
Thank you, Mark!
On a personal note, I've seen galleries selling this photo in poster size online over the years at upwards of $1,000 -- if you're looking to purchase one I'd suggest running a search because they are out there. Please do not email me about selling or buying a print via this website because I don't have any current information on galleries and I'd rather not get involved in any brokering. Thanks for your understanding. :-)
Special thanks to David Newton for providing the beautiful scan!
